Mitsubishi Montero Rollover

The Mitsubishi Montero has been rated “not acceptable” after it tipped up on two wheels during emergency avoidance maneuver tests. None of the other vehicles in the test tipped. Even though the Montero is designed for off-roading, it does not have rollbars. The Montero, like other sports utility vehicles, does not have to meet the roof safety standards set by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration.

Montero rollovers occur because of a lack of a lower center of gravity and a wider wheel base. The flimsy roof design of the SUV caused severe injuries and deaths in rollover accidents. The flimsy roof and the car’s tendency to tip lead Consumer Reports to issue a warning about the Montero.
