In May 2007, General Electric Company (GE) recalled 2.5 million dishwashers. The liquid rinse aid can leak onto the dishwasher’s internal wiring, which can cause an electrical short and overheating, a potential fire hazard. The dishwashers were sold in appliance and department stores from Sept. 1997 to Dec. 2001.
General Electric received 191 reports of overheated wiring including 56 reports of property damage. A reported 12 fires escaped the dishwasher into the adjacent area. Recalled brands names include Eterna, GE, GE Profile, Hotpoint, GE Monogram and Sears-Kenmore.
