Figherfighters PASS Device

The firefighter PASS (Personal Alert Safety System) device acts a motion sensor that makes noise if a firefighter stops moving for 30 seconds while fighting a fire. The device flashes and emits a sequence of beeps, alerting other firefighters that one of their own may be in danger. Federal and independent lab tests state that some of these PASS alarms fail to work if they get too hot or wet, a problem to firefighters entering burning buildings with fire hoses. Federal investigative reports show that 15 firefighters have died since 1998 when a PASS device did not sound, or did so too quietly. Nine deaths occurred after the government halted an investigation into the possible failures of these systems.
