Nursing Home Abuse:

If Abuse Is Suspected

Nursing home abuse can occur in the form of physical elder abuse, psychological abuse, or neglect. Potential indicators of elder abuse include a drastic change in appearance or behavior, unexplained bruises or injuries, use physical restraint not ordered by a doctor, and poor hygiene. If abuse is suspected, as many details as possible about the situation should be obtained prior to reporting the problem. It is important to gather the names, ages, and addresses of those involved. The situation should then be reported to the nursing home administration, the Department of Social Services, and/or local law enforcement. Victims of nursing home abuse may be protected under the Nursing Home Reform Act and a nursing home abuse attorney should be sought immediately.
