Unique Concerns After Adoption

Explaining Sexuality to Children: For gay and lesbian families, discussions about sexuality, can be an even more sensitive subject than it would be for heterosexual families. It is especially important when talking with your children to stress what values (love, respect, understanding, etc.) mean to your family, and to recognize that there are many different types of families.

Getting Support: Like other adoptive parents, same-sex couples look for ways to incorporate their children into their lives and help them make a smooth transition. They also want to meet other homosexual couples who are in the same situation as them with regard to parenting. A support system of family and friends is also extremely important.
