Guidelines for Handling Complaints

When you receive a harassment complaint, the following are some basic rules to follow:

  • Keep an open mind
  • Don't blame the complainer, they are the victim
  • Treat the complainer with compassion and respect
  • Do not retaliate against the complainer—it is illegal
  • Follow your established harassment policies
  • Research harassment laws
  • Interview the people involved
  • Look for contradiction or corroboration
  • Take notes during your interviews
  • Keep the information confidential
  • Cooperate with government agencies
  • Considering hiring an experienced investigator
  • Take appropriate action against the wrongdoer
