For some people, choosing a career is a time-consuming process. But not for Elizabeth Doss – the Missouri native had her future mapped out early on. As a high school junior, she was selected to be a delegate for the Missouri Girls State, a summer leadership program sponsored by the American Legion. That event sparked in her a life-long passion for law, an interest that she would continue to foster for years to come.
During that summer, she attended a course where a local attorney discussed landlord/tenant law. For Doss, that encounter was a “light bulb moment” of sorts. “I remember thinking that people sign leases every day, not really understanding what they are signing or what the repercussions are,” she recalls. “I decided to become an attorney because I thought it would help me better understand the transactions that impact my daily life and, through that understanding, I would be able to help and empower others.”
Doss’ determination to pursue a law career continued during her undergraduate studies at the University of Central Missouri, where she was part of the Mock Trial Team, as well as a member of Pre-Law Student Association. She then continued on to the University of Arkansas School of Law, receiving her Juris Doctor degree in 2013.
Strong legal skills
While still in law school, Doss was building a solid foundation for her future career, getting involved in a variety of cases within several legal fields: she worked as a corporate legal extern for Walmart, as well as a student attorney for her university’s Civil Clinic.
“My work there focused on helping victims of wage theft,” she relates. “My clients were hardworking men and women who were not being paid minimum wage by their employers, or only being paid minimum wage for some of the hours they worked. I will never forget how incredibly grateful and joyous they were when we were able to recover their wages for them.”
After law school, Doss worked as an attorney at a personal injury firm where she focused primarily on settling cases before they went to trial. “I learned that I wanted to work in a position that allowed me to directly interact with clients and use my litigation skills in a courtroom.” she says.
A passion for family law
With such a range of different cases under her belt, how did Doss narrow down her area of interest? “I worked as a law clerk at a firm that practiced family law and that was where my passion in this particular field really began,” she says. “I was drawn to it because family law is an area where I can help clients navigate through their most difficult times and move forward with their lives.”
To Warren & Migliaccio, which she joined in October 2014, Doss brings not only her legal experience, but also many personal qualities that allow her to be an effective and compassionate advocate for her clients. As she puts it, “A good family law attorney should be articulate, confident, an excellent listener, and a strong litigator.”
Doss has all these skills and more: “I am also detail oriented, hardworking, and excel in the areas of legal research and writing. And, I am very patient and comfortable interacting with clients.”
