Patents come in three main classes, comprising of utility patents, plant patents and design patents. Utility patents are issued for the invention of a useful and new machine, process, composition or manufacture or a new and useful improvement of one. These patents, also referred to as patents for invention, permit its owners to exclude others from using, making or selling the invention. A plant patent is issued for a distinct, new, invented or discovered asexually reproduced plant. Design patents are issued for original, new and ornamental designs for an article of manufacture.
