An alien who is likely to become a public charge will be ineligible for a visa into the United States. Aliens can also be removed from the United States if they become a public charge within five years of entrance. The term describes people who can’t support themselves and depend on benefits for money. People obtaining Supplemental Security Income or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families for their income would be considered public charge.
