At the age of 16, my unmarried son had fathered a child in Virginia. Now at the age of 17, he has received a summons to appear for child support. My question is; Since he is still a minor, could he be ordered to pay child support or will my son's custodial parent (his mother) be held liable until he reaches the age of 18? Could I (the non-custodial parent) be held liable? Thank you for any insights.
I'm not an attorney, but I was a teen mom at the age of 15 and the father was 15. When I divorced him, I had the court order him to pay child support and since he was 15, they ordered it at the lowest rate possible which was and still is $22.44 per week. So, no, they will not go after the minor's parents because you are not a parent to that child. Please do not take this as legal advice because again, I'm not an attorney. But I hope this helps.
