Unfortunately, if you are an at will employee you can be terminated for almost any reason, as long as it is not discriminatory in nature. It's perfectly understandable that you would want to check on your husband, but although your employer certainly sounds as if they are being unsympathetic to your situation, they may not have done anything illegal in firing you. That said, I'm not an employment lawyer myself, these are just my thoughts based on your post.
