Illegal and unsafe u-turns are a traffic violation that can be ticketed in most states. States laws vary with regard to what qualifies as an illegal or unsafe u-turn. Some state laws are not specific, allowing u-turns only when conditions, situation, and surroundings render the turn reasonable safe. Other states have more precise prohibitions, including not allowing u-turns on or near the top of a hill or near a curve that limits the driver’s visibility. Obviously, a u-turn in an intersection or other location with a posted “No U-Turn” sign is illegal and the driver may be ticketed.
