James T Flaherty

Biographical Information

James T. Flaherty has been practicing law for 35 years. In his practice he deals with the problems created by the breakdown of the marital relationship. The solutions to the problems include mediation and trials of issues relating to large and small marital estates, complex and simple custody issues, and post judgment enforcement issues. He also frequently receives referrals from other members of the family bar requesting that he try or co-try their family cases in which there is little or no prospect of settlement.

Attorney Flaherty utilizes mediation as a first choice to assist couples seeking to amicably end their marriages. He provides legal counsel in family law matters involving domestic violence, paternity, prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, qualified domestic relations orders (QDROs), same sex family law, father's rights, restraining orders, spousal support, child support, separation agreements, and uncontested divorce.

Attorney James T. Flaherty serves as Special Master in the Tolland, New Britain and Hartford Judicial Districts and has also been selected to serve as a Special Master for the Regional Family Trial Docket in Middletown. He has lectured on various family law topics educating young family law attorneys in this field. Attorney Flaherty is admitted to practice in Connecticut and the U.S. District Court for Connecticut, and is a member of the American, Connecticut and Hartford Bar Associations, as well as the American and Connecticut Trial Lawyers Association. He has extensive trial experience in the family, criminal and civil courts throughout Connecticut.

Attorney Flaherty received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Tufts University and was in the top 10% of his graduating class at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Law. He was also selected to serve as a law clerk to the Appellate Session of the Superior Court of the State of Connecticut. Prior to law school, Attorney Flaherty served a six-year term with the United States Navy, where he attained the rank of Lieutenant. Attorney Flaherty served a tour of duty in Vietnam and in the Pentagon as Administrative Assistant to the Chief of Legislative Affairs for the Navy. He resides with his wife in Canton, where they raised their four boys.
