Biographical InformationEDUCATIONAfter graduating from Staples High School in Westport, Connecticut, Attorney Christopher C. Burdett attended Drew University in Madison, New Jersey, where he had a dual major in economics and political science, earned academic honors and played varsity baseball. He then attended the Rutgers University School of Law in Newark, New Jersey, where he was an editor of the Rutgers Law Review, a member of several student-faculty committees, and co-chairman with Professor Allan Axelrod of the committee which re-vamped the law school grading and honors system. He also served for two years as a research assistant to law school Professors Robert A. Carter and Arthur Kinoy. He graduated from Rutgers cum laude in May of 1968, and received the J.Skelley Wright Award for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties. PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE Following law school, Attorney Burdett was admitted to the New York bar and became an Associate Counsel in the Appeals Bureau of the Legal Aid Society of the City of New York. After handling cases in the Appellate Division and the New York Court of Appeals for eighteen months, he transferred to the Criminal Defense (trial) Division of the Legal Aid Society, and during the next three years he tried several hundred bench trials and more than sixty jury trials in the New York City Criminal Courts, the New York Supreme Court and the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. He next moved to the Civil Division of the Legal Aid Society, first as Assistant Attorney-in Charge and then as acting Attorney-in-Charge, and two years later he returned to the Criminal Division, where he was the Chairman and Chief Negotiator for the Association of Legal Aid Attorneys of the City of New York - the first lawyer's union in the United States. During his final three years with the Legal Aid Society he served as an Assistant Attorney-in-Charge of the entire Manhattan Criminal Defense Division, and also had a number of interesting clients of his own, including Philippe Petit, Thomas Berry and Patricia Mackin. In 1975 Attorney Burdett returned to Connecticut, became a member of the Connecticut bar and began practicing with a prominent Fairfield trial attorney, engaging primarily in personal injury litigation. After two years he moved to a small litigation firm in Stamford, and then in 1980 he opened his own office. Except for a two-year stint in the early 1990's as the senior partner in a three-lawyer litigation firm, he has had his own office ever since, preferring the autonomy, independence and direct one-on-one client relationships which such a practice allows. Attorney Burdett served as Special Counsel for Litigation for the City of Norwalk from 1986 to 1988, and has also served for more than twenty-five years as a private mediator in both civil and family cases. CURRENT PRACTICE While Attorney Burdett has handled many types of litigation, including criminal defense, personal injury, medical and legal malpractice, commercial law, land-use and matrimonial, since 2006 his practice has been limited almost exclusively to matrimonial and family law. Throughout his career Attorney Burdett has also handled a number of significant appeals, including the Connecticut Supreme Court case of Worsham v. Griefenberger, and he has been trial counsel in several divorce cases which later resulted in significant Connecticut Appellate Court decisions, including Porter v. Thrane, Stahl v. Bayliss, and the recent case of Oldani v. Oldani. Since 1979 Attorney Burdett has served as a Special Master for the Connecticut Superior Court in both civil and family matters, and as a Fact Finder and Attorney Trial Referee in the civil side of the court. Attorney Burdett is a member of the Family Law Section of Connecticut Bar Association and a member of the Family Law Committee of the Fairfield County Bar Association.
